Abstract.
I will discuss the relation between the existence of symmetric tensors with coefficients on smooth subvarieties in a projective space with the properties of its tangent maps. For subvarieties of small codimension the conjecture is that the existence of sections in Sm(Ω1⊗O(1)) for m>>0 is equivalent to the existence of an embedding into a union of quadrics.
