Abstract.
We want to give the basic notions of the theory of shadows of 4- and 3-manifolds. They are simple 2-polyhedra with a further structure. Roughly speaking they are the 4-dimensional analogous of spines of 3-manifolds. If the time is enough, we will talk about some of their applications.
