Abstract.
The moduli space of stable surfaces is a modular compactification of the Giesecker moduli space of (canonical models of) projective algebraic surfaces of general type. We show that the compactification has many extra irreducible and connected components. The construction of examples is phrased in terms of a virus surface V infecting suitable non-normal Gorenstein stable surfaces and will be illustrated by many pictures.
