Abstract.
I will give an introduction to the notion of finite type invariants of knots, also called Vassiliev invariants. We will see that the spaces of Vassiliev invariants can be described by means of chord diagrams, thanks to the Kontsevich invariant. If time permits, I will say a word about the generalization of the notion of finite type invariants in the case of 3-manifolds.
