Abstract.
Every (bounded) double complex over a field decomposes as a direct sum of very simple parts: So-called `squares' and `zigzags'. From this point of view, the double complexes of $\mathbb{C}$-valued forms on compact complex manifolds will be investigated. Known restrictions on the occurring simple parts will be surveyed and some new results, e.g. a formula for the double complex of a blow-up, will be given.
