The Korteweg-de Vries Instituut voor Wiskunde (KdV Institute) is the mathematical research institute of the Faculty of Science of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The KdV Institute offers a stimulating scientific environment in which research focuses mainly within the research programmes (1) Algebra, Geometry and Mathematical Physics, (2) Pure, Applied and Numerical Analysis, and (3) Stochastics. It also provides the lecturers and instructors for the mathematics teaching within the Science faculty. The KdV Institute participates in the NWO research clusters GQT, STAR, NDNS+ and DIAMANT and in the Gravity programme NETWORKS. There is formal (and informal) cooperation with the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the VU University, and with Eurandom in Eindhoven. KdVI counts about 30 staff members and 40 postdoctoral researchers and PhD candidates.

Job description
We are looking for a candidate with excellent qualities on both research and teaching who could strengthen or complement the existing research directions in our research group (algebraic geometry, arithmetic geometry, representation theory, Lie theory, non-commutative geometry, integrable systems, and geometric aspects of quantum theory), and further enhance the cohesion within our research group. Collaboration with other researchers in The Netherlands or abroad is strongly encouraged.
Besides research, the candidate will have teaching duties both at the bachelor and master level, and will supervise master and-or PhD candidates.

Requirements
- A PhD in Mathematics or in an adjacent field;
- a deep and broad understanding of the research field, as is reflected in outstanding publications in the international literature and high profile research projects;
- experience with initiating, carrying out and supervising research projects;
- preferably a broad teaching experience reflecting in positive evaluations, a clear vision on education, and a passion for teaching;
- excellent communication and didactic qualities; ability to teach in Dutch and English. Candidates who do not yet speak Dutch will be given the opportunity to learn it.

Appointment
The initial appointment will be for a period of five years. Based on performance indicators agreed on at the start of the appointment, a tenure track position will lead to a tenured position in a period of maximally 5 years. In the beginning of the fifth year of the appointment the tenure decision will be taken. For more experienced candidates tailor made arrangements up to the level of associate professor can be considered.
Candidates must demonstrate their ability to secure grant funding as well as their commitment to excellence in teaching. KdVI expects its tenured staff to acquire sufficient fluency in the Dutch language within three years of appointment.
The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel. Based on a full time appointment (38 hours per week) the maximum salary is €5,070 gross per month. The Collective Employment Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities is applicable.
Within the Faculty of Science, newly appointed staff follow a didactic training trajectory. Foreign teaching qualifications-certificates are assessed in compliance with the regulations of the faculty.
