The Department of Mathematics of the University of Rome Tor Vergata is usually ranked among the best Department of Mathematics in Italy and in Europe, and has been recently awarded a "Department of Excellence" grant (2018-2022) by the Italian Ministry for University and Research (MIUR), which will allow it - among other things - to organise additional scientific activities (advanced courses, workshops, visiting professors, intensive research periods, etc...), including extra-funding for Ph.D. students’ travels and scholarships.

Members of the department's research interests cover all areas of pure and applied Mathematics, including: Algebraic and Arithmetic Geometry, Number Theory, Complex Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Calculus of Variations and PDE, Operator Algebras and Quantum Field Theory, Nonlinear Analysis, Celestial Mechanics, Statistical Physics, Numerical Analysis, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Representation Theory and Algebraic Combinatorics.
